About this course

Part of the Concrete Elegance series produced by The Building Centre and The Concrete Centre.

The building provides a new world-class performance facility for the Guildhall School of Music & Drama - including a new 625 seat concert hall, 225 seat theatre, 120 seat studio theatre, and associated rehearsal, administrative and teaching spaces. The residential tower provides 295 apartments over 36 storeys.

The scheme also combines academic and cultural uses with high-rise residential accommodation, but introduces clarity to the building’s organisation and circulation, and reasserts the primacy of the street as the realm for access and public interaction.

The concert hall, the main volume of the school, is clad in polished white concrete in contrast to the predominantly black glass volume of the residential tower. This black and white palate establishes a subdued monochromatic character for the building and further emphasizes the duality of the brief as a positive compositional attribute.
